BATAVIA, Ohio — A search warrant for electronic devices led Clermont County investigators to a bathroom safe containing methamphetamine, pipes, and drug-use tools, according to court records.
Johnny Varney and Ronda Varney are each facing second-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs charges after deputies searched a home on Sioux Court in Batavia on April 16.
According to an affidavit filed in Clermont County Municipal Court, the original search warrant was aimed at collecting electronic devices owned by Johnny Varney.
During the search, investigators found a black safe in the bathroom of the master bedroom. The safe was large enough to contain an electronic device, so officers accessed it and found what appeared to be a large amount of methamphetamine inside.
A second search warrant was then drafted and executed to seize the narcotics, according to the affidavit.
Investigators said the substance was tested by the Clermont County Narcotics Unit and confirmed as methamphetamine. Court records say the drugs were found in two separate baggies with a total gross weight of 25 grams.
The affidavit also states Johnny Varney, who was already incarcerated, allegedly messaged Ronda Varney using a jail communication device known as Chirp. Investigators said both discussed the safe and were aware of its contents.
Warrants were issued for both defendants on April 23 and later served. Bond hearings were scheduled for April 24.
