MIAMISBURG, Ohio — A stolen-car chase across southwest Ohio ended in a crash in Miamisburg before the driver allegedly ran from the vehicle, dodged officers and jumped into a river.
The chase happened Thursday evening after Franklin police were alerted that Middletown officers were pursuing a stolen black Chevrolet Impala heading toward Franklin.
According to the Franklin Division of Police, an officer saw the vehicle run a red light at Anderson Street and Sixth Street shortly after 7 p.m. while travelling north at high speed. Police said the Impala continued along Anderson Street, passed the Franklin Police Department, turned onto Fourth Street and then headed north on Riley Boulevard while ignoring several traffic signals.
The pursuit continued into Miamisburg, where the stolen vehicle allegedly ran another red light at First Street and Linden Avenue. Police said the Impala struck a vehicle travelling west on Linden Avenue, then hit a parked vehicle before stopping in the middle of First Street.
The driver then ran toward the river and jumped in, according to police.
Miamisburg officers arrested the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Juan Harris of Dayton. Harris was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police said he is expected to face charges of obstructing official business and felony failure to comply. He is expected to be booked into the Warren County Jail after being released from hospital.
Authorities said Harris also had an active warrant and was driving under suspension at the time of the pursuit. The driver of the vehicle struck during the crash was also taken to hospital for treatment.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.
